In the case of Outsider Art, no matter how extraordinary or original the work itself may be, the story behind it is intimately involved in establishing its authenticity. Alans Art is the real thing! Alan is now 61 and has many complex mental issues. His perceptions of people places and events are filtered. From birth, Alan has been unique, he reacts and interacts with the world on his own terms, interpreting and recording his observations of his life through his art. As a teenager Alan was sectioned under the mental Health Act and spent much of his adult life in a mental hospital. He has, in latter years, settled down in a small community home where he has been able to have access to a greater range of art materials and been encouraged to express himself through his art. Alan has no sense of value, he owns nothing; he craves nothing, only to satisfy the urge to make lines on paper. He is reactionary; he is prolific and will use any materials available to him. He has no recognition of the desires, intentions or influences of others and is not driven by the quest for wealth.
His work is simple yet compelling allowing us to see briefly into his world. Alan is a contextual artist of the highest order.
